Valerian(Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and parts of Asia, it is now also found in North America. Valerian root has a long history of use dating back to ancient Greece and Rome. Traditionally, it has been valued for its calming and relaxing properties.

Valerian is recognised for its tall, hollow stems, pinnately divided leaves, and clusters of sweetly scented pale pink or white flowers that bloom in late spring and summer. The root, which is thick and aromatic with a strong, earthy scent, is the part most commonly used in herbal preparations.

Valerian is commonly used for supporting restful sleep and aiding with occasional insomnia, promoting relaxation and helping to ease mild tension & supporting a sense of calm during periods of stress or nervousness.

Valerian root has also been used to help with symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause, such as irritability and nervousness.

Valerian is used as a tea, in tinctures and sometimes placed in capsules.

Herbal Tea: Add 1–2 teaspoons of dried valerian root to a cup of hot water, steep for 10–15 minutes, strain, and enjoy before bedtime.

Precautions: Valerian is generally intended only for short term use.  Caution advised if using of any other sedatives as Valerian may increase their effects.  Consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products
