Common Name: Guarana
Botanical Name: Paullinia cupana
Family: Sapindaceae
Origin: Brazil
Part: Seed
Form: Powdered extract.
Paullinia cupana is a climbing plant in the family Sapindaceae, native to the Amazon basin and especially common in Brazil. Guaraná has large leaves and clusters of flowers, and is best known for the seeds from its fruits, which are about the size of a coffee bean.
Guarana seeds contain a high concentration of caffeine (2% to 8%), far higher than in coffee beans (1% to 3%). It is this quality that has made Guarana a sought after ingredient in energy drinks, supplements and herbal teas.
Guarana has been revered for centuries by indigenous Amazonian tribes such as the Guarani and Sateré-Mawé. Traditionally, its seeds were roasted, ground into a paste, and shaped into sticks or “guarana bread.” This would be grated into water to create a stimulating beverage, consumed during periods of fasting or before hunts to support alertness and endurance.
This is a powdered Guarana extract standardised to 22% caffeine by weight.
