Yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) is a widespread herbaceous plant native to Europe, Asia and North America.  It typically grows up to 1 meter tall and is easily recognised by its finely divided, feathery leaves and clusters of small, white to pale pink flowers that bloom from late spring through autumn.

Yarrow has a rich history of herbal use spanning thousands of years and many cultures. In ancient Greece and Rome, yarrow was renowned for its ability to treat wounds, stop bleeding, and reduce inflammation—a reputation reflected in its Latin name, which references Achilles, the legendary Greek warrior said to have used the plant to heal his soldiers.

Native American nations also widely used yarrow, not only for wound healing but for digestive issues, fever reduction, and as a general “life medicine.” It was chewed for toothaches, brewed as a tea for colds and fevers, and used in infusions for earaches and other ailments. In European folk medicine, yarrow was valued for alleviating menstrual discomfort, promoting sweating to break fevers, and supporting digestive health.

In modern herbalism, yarrow continues to be used for its traditional purposes, including as a tea to support comfort during colds and fevers, and topically for minor skin irritations.

Yarrow was also one of the three main ingredients in 'Gruit Ale'. This beverage was the ale of Europe prior to the predominate use of hops and what we now know as ale.
